Kyle Buckingham chats about how he has trained and what his expectations are ahead of the 2017 Ironman African Championship, in which he is eyeing a podium placing.
One of the most iconic races in the world, the Ironman covers 3.8km of swimming, 180.2km of cycling and 42.2km of running. The top field for this year will be as strong as any Kona Ironman World Championship event.
“I have had a very different lead up to Ironman South Africa this year, heading off to 70.3 Philippines for a great tune up three weeks before the race,” said Buckingham.
“My recovery after Philippines was great and I got straight back into training. My training in numbers have been impressive but I know I have to be a smart athlete on race day.
“I have just seen the start line names and there are 40 top pro men (just as strong as Kona).”
The 34-year-old athlete from Port Elizabeth has been racing Ironman around the globe for the past six years.
