Organisers of the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon have announced a stellar elite men’s field for the second edition of the 42.2km race on September 20.
They include defending champion Willy Kibor Koitile, who holds the course record (2:10:45), and fellow Kenyans Peter Lotogor Kamais and David Kemboi Kiyeng, who holds the fastest personal best in the field (2:06:26).
Abraham Girma Bekele, Haile Haja Gemeda, Andualem Belay Shiferaw and Dereje Debele Tulu will represent the Ethiopian challenge, while Yuki Kawauchi and Nicholas Kipngeno Kemboi will line up for Japan and Qatar respectively.
The South African contingent includes some of the country’s most accomplished athletes, including 2004 New York Marathon winner Hendrick Ramaala and former 5 000m SA record holder Shadrack Hoff in the veteran’s category.
Shaun Meiklejohn, who won the 1995 Comrades ultra-marathon, lines up in the masters’ division.
Rising stars Xolisa Tyali, Gladwin Mzazi and Africa Mailola round out the local field.
