Greg Louw and Andy Birkett won the overall men’s title at the Fish River Canoe Marathon in Cradock, Eastern Cape, today.
The winning pair outmatched day one leaders Stuart Maclaren and Cyrille Carre while Murray Starr and Adrian Boros powered home to take third overall.
Maclaren and Carre were right in the mix until they fell out at around 9km to the finish.
The mistake gave the advantage to Louw and Birkett to claim their second consecutive title.
Merrell-Knysna Racing’s Louw said they had a good day and managed to get through all the major obstacles without any mistakes.
“Stu and Cyrille were really strong throughout and it could have been anyone’s race right up until they had an unfortunate swim.”
The women’s title went to Jenna Ward and Anna Kožíšková ahead of Bridgitte Hartley and Krisztina Bedec, who had a one minute and one second lead over Ward and Kožíšková on day one.
Rounding off the podium were Kyeta Purchase and Kerry Segal.
“I did feel a bit of pressure going into the race considering Anna has won the last few Fish’s with Abby Solms,” said Ward.
She was, however, proud to be able to say that she has done a good job.
