Madibaz men’s coach Cheslyn Gie will be looking for an overall improvement when the second weekend of Varsity Hockey matches starts in Pretoria tomorrow.
The Nelson Mandela University side lost all four matches in Johannesburg last weekend and Gie said he wanted to see better execution of their game-plan this time.
“Defensively we need to be more patient in the tackle and improve our marking of the opponents.
“We also need to be more assured in one-on-one situations and be more accurate in our penalty corner execution.”
With the spirit in the squad still good, he said they would be aiming at utilising their power plays better and to be more effective when on attack.
With 16 of the 18-strong squad making their debuts at the tournament, Gie said they always knew they would face a tough assignment.
“Despite the inexperience in the squad, the players fought hard in every match,” he said.
“They learnt a lot from this experience and now understand what it takes to succeed at this level.”
