With the support of Bestmed, NMMU athletics will be aiming to safeguard the club’s future when the Bestmed Madibaz Top 10 Athletics Meeting for schools takes place in the Cradock Stadium on Saturday.
A total of 40 schools will compete in the meeting to be hosted by Cradock High School, supplemented by a number of Madibaz athletes as they prepare for the new season.
Having already been involved in NMMU athletics, Madibaz Sports athletics manager Nellis Bothma said the medical aid company had increased their level of support for the Bestmed Madibaz Athletics Club.
“Under the new sponsorship, Bestmed have a three-year contract with the Madibaz Athletics Club and they will have the naming rights for the club’s track and field events.”
He added that Bestmed would also support the George campus’s athletics programme, including a street mile series in George, Mossel Bay and Oudtshoorn in December.
The sponsorship, he said, would be important in helping the university’s student-athletes to be competitive in the varsity system, while there was also focus on attracting young talent.
“We want to form partnerships with schools athletes who might be keen on linking up with us next season.
“The bottom line is that we are implementing a plan to enhance our performances and to strengthen relationships with our partners.
“We need to recruit strategically for our club to ensure we stay a force in EP and Varsity Athletics.”
Bothma said they would use meetings such as Cradock as a breeding ground to boost their resources for the Varsity Athletics competition in March and April next year.
