An experienced Blitzboks sevens squad will travel to Dubai next week for the opening tournament of the 2016-17 World Rugby Sevens Series on December 2 and 3.
Led by Philip Snyman, four of the Blitzboks’ senior players – Kyle Brown (56 tournaments), Chris Dry (52), Cecil Afrika and Branco du Preez (45 each) – have played in a combined total of 198 tournaments. Snyman, himself, has played in 37 tournaments.
It will be the 10th time Brown has played in a tournament in Dubai, while, at the other end of the scale, Dylan Sage and Siviwe Soyizwapi will experience the Arabian Desert venue for the first time.
Soyizwapi is the Blitzboks’ standby player, thanks to a new tournament rule which allows an additional player to be selected for the squad in case of injury.
Coach Neil Powell could not pick the injured Tim Agaba and named Sage as a forward for this trip.
“Dylan has played as a forward for us before and did very well in Namibia,” said Powell.
The Blitzboks will face Scotland in pool play, as well as Uganda and USA in their other matches next Friday.
The Blitzboks squad for Dubai is: Chris Dry, Philip Snyman, Dylan Sage, Kwagga Smith, Werner Kok, Kyle Brown, Branco du Preez, Rosko Specman, Justin Geduld, Cecil Afrika, Ruhan Nel, Seabelo Senatla, Siviwe Soyizwapi.
