The Daily Dispatch Summer Fun Run provided a festive start to the holiday season when about 2 000 runners joined in the celebrations on the East London Esplanade on Sunday.
Supported by SPAR Eastern Cape, this long-running event has been on the local calendar for nearly 40 years and it again provided a day which had something for everyone.
Several options, from 8km to 4km, were on offer and there was also a wheelchair event over 4km.
SPAR EC sponsorship and events manager Alan Stapleton said the event was “just what the doctor ordered”.
“It was a wonderful start to the holiday period and while we acknowledge the winners, the day was all about having fun.
“At SPAR, we feel it is important to stay involved with the East London community and this is a perfect outing for us to show our support.”
A key element of the fun run is to raise awareness of people with physical disabilities and to generate funds for the Association for the Rehabilitation of Persons with Disability (ARPD), which is based in East London.
Stapleton said he was happy to report that they were able to donate R15 000 to ARPD.
“There were many people in wheelchairs and people with prosthetics who took part in the race. It was amazing to have them involved and to see their enthusiasm.”
