Britain’s pre-race favourite Jodie Swallow claimed her sixth Standard Bank Ironman 70.3 title in East London, South Africa, today.
She recorded splits of 25:15 (1.9km swim), 2:26:01 (90km bike) and 1:27:28 (21.1km run) for an overall winning time of 4:23:28.
Germany’s Astrid Stienen (+18:32) and SA’s Annah Watkinson (+20:06) were second and third overall respectively.
Swallow was first to exit the water – followed by Lucie Zelenkova from the Czech Republic and Susie Cheetham from Britain – and headed out on the bike leg as rain started to fall. Watkinson went into first transition in fifth, 34 seconds down.
Swallow dominated the bike leg to extend her lead to 15:38 over Stienen and 17:55 over Watkinson at second transition at Orient Beach.
She further stretched her lead on the run leg to win comfortably.
The men’s race was won by SA’s Matt Trautman.
